We are involved in Irish Set Dancing which is a form of dance derived originally from old French
quadrilles and cotillons, adapted and very much changed to a lively and energetic form of dance. The dances are done in groups
of eight, two couples facing each other, gent on the left, with another two couples at right angles to them. First tops are
the couple with their backs to the music, second tops facing them. The couple on the left of first tops are (usually) first
sides, with the couple opposite them second sides. This arrangement is called a set. Dances are made up of a number of figures,
normally four, five or six. A dance is also called a set and can last around twenty minutes or so. The complex moves need
to be memorised over time. In Northern Ireland and in some other parts of Ireland there will be a caller giving instructions.
In most other parts of Ireland you need to know what comes next! One of the most enjoyable and social forms of exercise anywhere
performed by dancers of all ages.
